A bed rest or back rest pillow is a large, somewhat stiff, pillow similar in look to the top section of a recliner. This cushion has a padded back with short armrests attached to it.
The person rests his or her back on the pillow while the armrests fall on either side of the the lower waist. While it may sound like a strange item, many people find it quite comfortable to lean on, especially when sitting up in bed and when reading in bed.
You can place the bed rest pillow on the floor or on a bed so you have something soft to lean against while you are doing activities such as watching TV, sewing or reading.
Those that have issues with their back may find this item useful for the extra support. While the top of most bed rests end just at the base of the person’s neck, some extend upward and provide support for the neck and head.
The typical back rest cushion is just a large pillow with no extra frills. Though pricier models come with features such as: adjustable reclining, built in cup holders, heat and massaging capabilities, and side pockets to store glasses, books or the remote in.
Some bed rest pillows come with a removable cover that you can take off and throw in the washing machine. If you are buying the bed rest for a young adult or child it may be a good idea to have this option in case they get it dirty. It can also be beneficial for those that have pets.
If you typically find yourself using multiple traditional pillows to prop yourself up then a back rest pillow may be for you.
Not only can it be more comfortable on your back, but also it can keep you from having to lean against the wall or another hard surface. They can be found with a range of various prices, and with a little looking around, perhaps online, you are sure to find something within your price range.
While Sitting in a Chair:
Sitting for long periods such as when working at a desk job can lead to poor posture, back pain, tension and stress. Most chairs do not provide the proper support needed to prevent such ailments from occurring. In fact, most chairs, including those at home have little to no built in support for you.
The expensive alternative is to buy new chairs….the cheaper and just as effective way is to utilize lumbar pillows that can be placed at the small of your lower back. Using a back support pillow can not only relieve back discomfort and pain, but prevent future problems altogether….
Lumbar back support pillows are specifically designed to conform to the curvature of your back which will aid in helping reduce tension and stress in the vertebrae, as well as allow the associated back muscles to relax.
These are designed to have therapeutic value when used on a regular basis and are great tools to reduce pain, inflammation, stress, and tension in the lower and even upper back region.
Standard Lumbar Designs:
Standard lumbar pillows are typically rectangular in shape and have a dimention of about 12 x 5 ‘’. Most are realatively thin at only a couple inches. This is to fill the small space where the curvature of your back is. Too thick and it actually could cause more harm than good. Other options such as cylindrical designs are also available.
Typically they are made of a dense foam cushion that is sturdy enough not to sink in when pressure is applied. This dense padding is firm enough to give support but not hard enough to cause discomfort, and isthe most common filling for lumbar pillows. Some are filled with memory foam, which “remembers” the contours of the user.
Remember, the idea is to provide support more so than just comfort. However, pricier options allow you to get a pillow with a solid core and a softer exterior which can provide a good balance of both support and comfort. Some lumbar support pillows have fillings that may provide additional benefits. Magnets are often included in lumbar pillows for this reason. Rice-filled pillows can be warmed in a microwave or cooled in a refrigerator to provide heat and cold therapy.
Just like other orthopedic pillows, back support pillows and cushions do not typically provide immediate relief. Best results are typically seen after using for at least two weeks. And remember that while they can be corrective they also prevent further issues from arising as well.
