Lumbar rolls are pillows designed for those who need additional lower back support or for those that experience lower back pain or discomfort. They are also especially usefull as an orthopedic travel pillow as there size allows for easy transport.
They typically provide comfort by encouraging or inducing proper posture while sitting for long periods of time (such as when at work or driving). Utilizing a back support roll while in these situations can reduce lower back stress and tension helping you to concentrate and feel more relaxed.
As these have become quite popular there are now many options as to the material you can find these in. The designs range from inflatable cushions, to memory foam padding, to traditional down pillows, to an outer and inner core type.
One common type of cushion is very similar to a “roll-roll” design. The outer padding is usually made of a durable material such as leather, vynal, etc. The inner padding can be made from a number of materials ranging from foam of varying density to down feathers.
The density needed will be specific to your needs so we suggest trying out a few first in store before buying. You can also buy these with a removable foam core so you can manually change the density as needed.
An alternative to the foam-filled roll is looking into inflatable models. Again, the outer shell is usually composed of a durable material. The inner chamber is usually a soft plastic meant to hold air.
Most often you cannot fill these with a “air pump” and manual blowing will be needed to inflate the model. These are especially useful when traveling as they can be deflated and packed without taking up much space. The downside is that the support provided is never as good as with a foam pad.
The best place to look for these types of orthopedic pillows is at medical supply stores, online chiropractic retailers, and pharmacies. As these can be expensive we suggest going to physical stores to “test” the product, and then doing internet research to find the best price online and ordering your pad.
Also, in order to find the best fit we suggest doing some research or speaking to your healthcare provider regarding the type of discomfort you feel and ALWAYS trying out a model in the store before purchase.
