Lumbar Support Pillows - Your Guide To Comfort And Support
For most individuals lying on their back is a natural way to sleep. However, it is also the position that can cause the most discomfort and stress to the lower lumbar region, especially is your bed is not ideal for your body type.
If you already suffer from moderate to serious back problems, then a firm mattress and bedding in conjunction with some lumbar support pillows will typically be the best solution. If however, your bedding is less firm or soft, you may want to consider a more firm or medium density foam cushions to supplement the lack of support your bed currently provides.
The lumbar support cushion is meant to alleviate pressure in the joints, tension in your muscles, to help you maintain normal spinal curvature, or to correct abnormal curvatures.
One important feature to keep in mind when looking for a backrest pillow is the design itself, specifically as it pertains to it’s size. A properly designed model will have a height lower than when placed in the sideways position. For example, most models will be fairly thin so as to not create an abnormal curvature when used.
Another key aspect is the firmness of the material. How hard or soft the padding or material is can make a BIG difference in how you will benefit from using them. Too soft and the support goes away….too dense and you experience little comfort and could possibly do more damage.
We recommend staying away from down and feather fillers, and sticking with a moderate density foam or memory pad material. However, you can always speak with your doctor or chiropractor for additional advice pertaining to how this will affect your specific situation.
While a specialized lumbar pillow will provide the most stable relief, it is also possible for you to achieve moderate results by placing two cushions between your knees or legs. Many will do this to save money as specialized pillows can be costly (though they do have durability).
If you choose to do this, make sure that the thickness does not put your legs in an unnatural position. Likewise, if the density of the material is too soft, then little to no support will be gained.
We recommend bed padding, or bed pads or moderate density foam for the best results if you choose not to purchase an orthopedic pillow.
Another option is to consider purchasing an orthopedic bed or bedding. The firmness of your bed and the springs can have a large impact on not only comfort, but on how you feel when you wake up.
While this is the more costly option, it may be worth it for a good nights sleep. You can’t put a price tag on quality rest and comfort, which can also lead to improved physical and mental health.
