Therapeutic & Contoured Pillows

Pillows have a big role in determining how well you will sleep. Even with the best mattress you can buy, a poorly matched pillow can ruin an entire night's sleep.

Sometimes conventional pillows just don't cut it, and that's where specialized cushions such as therapeutic pillows come inThis guide will introduce you to some wonderful alternatives to everyday conventional pillows, some of which may help you to reduce pain, alleviate tension and stress, provide you with superior comfort, and ultimately result in a good night’s rest.

Luxury Pillows

Memory Foam Pillows

  • Memory foam  is a material that adjusts to the contour of your body, most often  the head and neck to provide a superior comfort and support. As your body heat transfers to the material it becomes less stiff, allowing the cushion to mold to the contour of your body.
  • Most are naturally antimicrobial and are hypoallergenic, making for a good alternative for those with allergies.
  • Most come equipped with a removable cover so you can machine wash the unit.
  • If you like the feel, you can buy a memory foam mattress  or mattress topper as well.

Cherry Stone Thermal Pillows

  • Cherry stone thermal pillows allow the user to either chill or heat up the pad to the desired temperature.
  • Great for soothing aching muscles, sore joints, or swollen injuries.
  • Cherry stones do a great job of maintaining their temperature once cooled or warmed.

Herbal Pillows

  • These specialized pillows are usually meant to be placed over the eyes, though some are also designed to fit the contour of your neck as well.
  • They typically contain a blend of botanicals intended to help soothe, relieve aches, and calm the nerves.
  • Some of the more common herbs include peppermint, rosemary, lavender and rose, though many others exist.
  • Also, some are specially formulated to treat various ailments such as headaches, stress  or sinus trouble.

Buckwheat Hull Pillows

  • These are made from dense material and are typically more stiff for those needing strong support not offered by conventional pads.
  • Again, these pads are not easily compressed and are better suited for those needing a strong support or those who are overweight.
  • Though the material is dense and heavy, some good characteristics are that they are cool, dry and well ventilated.
  • Buckwheat hulls  are the leftover material from buckwheat flour processing.
  • Pillows are sold overstuffed much of the time - do not discard the extra hulls! You can save the extra padding that you remove to add back later as the pillow becomes more worn or broken in with age.
  • The hulls flatten out with use and this will help you achieve the best volume of hulls.
  • "Noisy"--the hulls make a crunching or rustling sound when you move around on them.

Pregnancy Pillows

  • Pregnancy pillows can be as minimal as a wedge placed under the belly or as large as a full-body pillow.
  • They are meant to help support the stomach and lower back while lying on your side, which is the recommended position for sleep throughout your pregnancy.
  • These are typically found containing a variety of materials usually including numerous plant fibers, synthetic fibers and down feathers. You may need to test out a few to see which density fits your needs best. The same holds true for the size and shape.
  • Typical shapes include: Bean, Comma Shaped, Body, Wedge and lower back shapes.
  • Many can also be used as comfortable nursing pillows.
